Wolf: Favre is greatest Packers player ever

GREEN BAY - The general manager who helped turn the Green Bay Packers from the league's laughing stock to a world champion in the 1990's says the quarterback who helped lead that turnaround is the greatest player ever to play for the NFL's most storied franchise.

By saying that, Ron Wolf continued a contentious debate that involves a subject which brings about often-angry passions amongst Packers fans, Brett Favre.

"When I got here, Don Huston was the greatest player ever to play for the Green Bay Packers. I think everybody will tell you now, the greatest player ever to play for the Packers is Brett Favre. That's his legacy," Wolf told the Green Bay Press Gazette.

In his 16 seasons in Green Bay, Favre re-wrote much of the NFL's record book when it came to career passing statistics: most yards, most touchdowns, most wins as a quarterback, most consecutive games played (at any position, not just quarterback).

But the way he left the Packers, retiring in March 2008 and subsequently unretiring at a time when the Packers had already begun the process of making current NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers the starter, left a bad taste in the mouths of the grand majority of the Packers' fan base - let alone the franchise itself.

That was part of the reason NFL Network picked Don Hutson as the greatest Packer of all time in its NFL Top 10 series.

Then, of course, there's the No. 3 pick of the NFL Network, the winningest starting quarterback in NFL history when it comes to championships, Bart Starr.

And the list goes on and on: Herb Adderley, Willie Davis, Paul Hornung, Ray Nitschke, Jim Taylor, Reggie White, etc.
